Goto.com was the first to have the idea to give the advertisers the option of bidding on how much they were willing to pay for their site to appear at the top of the search results with regards to certain keywords and searches. In February 1998 that idea was realized and every time a web searcher clicked on a link that brought them to the advertisers site, that bid amount would be paid by the advertiser. Their idea was that websites that paid more for their clicks were better websites all around. Goto.com was very successful and in 2001 renamed itself Overture Services, Inc to go with their vision of sophistication and expansion.

One of Overture's largest clients was in fact Yahoo! They became a significant profit driver for Yahoo! With the amount of success Overture received, they were able to gain such sites as AlltheWeb and AltaVista. In 2003, Yahoo acquired Overture for $1.63 billion and has since phased out the Overture name with the exception of Japan and Korea where they still use the Overture name.
